The major portion of the Dooars region is now in the new district of Alipurduar. The beauty of the region lies not only in its tea gardens but also in the dense jungles. A number of rare endangered species of animals like tiger, rhinoceros and elephant make their habitat in the forests of the Dooars. Other animals include different types of deer, bison, birds and reptiles.
Located in the north bank of the Kaljani River, Alipurduar is the gateway to Bhutan and the north-eastern states of India. Pumtse is the highest peak of Chhota Sinchula area in Alipurduar. The peak offers beautiful views of the impermeable forest covers of the Buxa hills and Bhutan valley.
The South Khairbari Tiger Rescue Centre, a unique endeavor that is unmatched in the entire north-east, has recently come up in Alipurduar. It now acts as a permanent shelter for tigers and the place has been aptly named 'Bagh Ban', meaning 'tiger forest' in Bengali.
Bhutan Ghat - Rydak
Bhutan Ghat – Rydak, known for its scenic beauty. It is idle for leisure holiday and angling. It is located near the border with Bhutan. A beautiful swift flowing river Raidak is there. There is also a beautiful forest bunglow built in 1904 closed to the river bank and is best to stay during monsoon.
How to reach
It is approachable from Siliguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar by railway and roadways. Bhutan Ghat is around 50 km away from Alipurduar town. Bagdogra is nearest Airport of this place. Nearest railway station (KM) : Alipurduar Jn. - 54 km, New Alipurduar - 50 km, Kamakhyaguri - 50 km. 218 km from Siliguri.
Buxa Fort is special attraction for the trekkers. It is situated 24 km from Alipurduar and 7 km from Buxa Road. The fort was particularly built for an arid prison at the Buxa on hill-cliff.
The Cooch King captured this fort from British Empire during the end of the 18th century. This Fort was used as a jail for prisoners. In order to save part of its Silk Route, the King of Bhutan used the Buxa Fort which connected Tibet with India.

The Nearest Rail Station to Buxa Fort is Alipurduar Junction. New Jalpaiguri is approximately 150 km from Buxa Fort. Bagdogra airport is around 160 km away.
Chilapata Forest is a dense forest close to Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary in Dooars, West Bengal. It is nearly 22 kms from Alipurduar and just a few minutes away from Hasimara town. This forest is used by the Elephants as a corridor to migrate from between Jaldapara and the Buxa Tiger Reserve and ultimately to Bhutan. Nature here is rich with wildlife and various types of Flora and Fauna. Angling, Birding, Safari are the few options. The forest used to be home to large Rhinoceros populations.
How to reach
Hasimara is the nearest rail station about 10 km away from Chilapata. Alipurduar is a major rail junction (20 km). Most trains traveling to North East pass through and stop at Alipurduar. The National Highway criss-crosses Dooars. Hasimara town is located on the highway, from here the road towards the south passes through Chilapata forest.
There is another route passing through the southern part of Dooars and going to Cooch Behar and Alipurduar from Jalpaiguri via Falakata. On this road there is a place called Sonapur crossing. From here the road going towards North reaches Chilapata forests through Mathura Tea Garden. As for rest of Dooars, the forests of Chilapata can be reached from Bagdogra Airport about 160 km away (3.5 hours drive). There is another airport at Cooch Behar (about an hour’s drive), but regular flights from Cooch Behar are not available.
Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary
Situated in the foothills of eastern Himalayas, the river Torsa flows through this rain forest sanctuary, the sanctuary encompasses luxuriant vegetation and a rich variety of wildlife. The Malangi River also flows nearby from east to west. Riding elephants and 4x4 safaris are the only ways to move inside this forest.

Board train from Kolkata to Jaldapara, a journey of about 12 hours. Madarihat is the nearest railway station. It is about 9 km from Bagdogra airport. The places covered between Kolkata and Jaldapara are Barddhaman Junction (95 km), Malda Town (328 km), KishanGanj (473 km), New Jalpaiguri (561 km)
Taxi from Kolkata to Jaldapara to travel by road. The cost of cab ranges from INR 5 per km, depending upon the type of car.
There are direct flights available to Jaldapara from Kolkata. Travel by flight takes about 1 hour. Several cab and taxi services are available outside the airport to travel from airport to other parts of Jaldapara. Bagdogra airport is the nearest airport near Jaldapara. It is about 99 km from Bagdogra airport to Jaldapara.
Kunjanagar ECO Park
Kunjanagar Eco Park is an amusement park where one can spot deers, elephants and even leopards. A boating facility is also available. It is nearly 10 kms from Falakata, touching Jaldapara Sanctuary and surrounded by rich forests and corn fields.
