Purba Medinipur district or East Midnapore district is the southernmost district of Burdwan division. The headquarters is located at Tamluk. It was formed on January 1, 2002 after the Partition of Midnapore into Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur which the northern and western border of it. The state of Odisha is at the south-west border whereas the Bay of Bengal in the south; the Hooghly river and South 24 Parganas district to the east and Howrah district to the north-east.

Digha
Digha is West Bengal's most popular sea resort and tourist spot located south west of Calcutta. It is 187 km from Calcutta and described as the 'Brighton of the East', it is best for a holiday. Digha has a low gradient with a shallow sand beach with gentle waves, that extends 7 kms in length.

By Air: Nearest airport to Digha is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata. Digha is well connected by road and rail network with Kolkata.

By Train: Nearest railhead is Digha railway station. There are frequently trains (Local or Express) available from Howrah station to Digha.

By Road: Digha is well connected by excellent road with Kolkata. One can take a bus from Esplanade, Howrah, Belgharia etc. or can go by car/cab through NH-6 till Kolaghat and then on NH-41 to reach Digha.

Junput
Junput is 177 km from Kolkata and 40 km from Digha; it also has a beautiful sea beach. The place offers spectacular sea-view and lines of casuarina trees. The beach is unspoilt. Brackish water fish cultivation and research are done here by the State Government Fisheries Department. For accommodation, there is an Inspection Bungalow under the Superintendent of Fisheries and a few private hotels.

The distance of Kolkata from Junput is 145 km. Drive along the route heading to Digha. From Kathi, Junput is just 9 km away. You can also opt for the railway route.

Mandarmoni
Mandarmoni 167 km from Kolkata it is a picnic resort that has recently become popular among tourists; it is a 13 km long virgin beach. Plenty of private hotels are available here. The place gets its name from the millions of red crabs roaming on the beach which look like the red mandar flower. The serenity of the beach is attracting a lot of tourists especially from Kolkata.

By Air: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose airport at Dum Dum in Kolkata is the nearest airport. From here one can either hire a private vehicle or opt for buses to reach Mandarmani.

By Train: Digha is the nearest railway station. It has regular trains from Howrah. From Digha railway station one can hire private vehicle to reach the pristine beach resort of Mandarmani.

By Road: Several state transport buses as well as private luxury buses are available from Esplanade/Howrah in Kolkata to Digha. Get down at Chaulkhola, from here local vehicles are available to reach Mandarmani.

Pathra

Barely 10 kms from Midnapore town, this nondescript hamlet is a treasure trove for those who like to travel back in time. The history of Pathra goes back to the Gupta age, when the place was the hinterland of Tamralipta port, a gateway to southeast Asia. From 8th Century to 12th Century, it was an important hub for Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. A majestic Vishnu Lokeshwar statue dug out in the village in October 1961 revealed both Hindu and Buddhist influences, indicating that practitioners of both religions frequented Pathra.

Pathra is a two-hour drive from the city of Kolkata. The road inside the village can be difficult to navigate after a spell of rain. Pathra can be reached through Kharagpur as well.

Kurumbera
Kurumbera Fort is situated around 6 km away from the Keshiari Village. It is surrounded by 10 ft high walls and has several small quarters and Temples. The Shiva Temple that was built between 1438 and 1469, is a prominent structure within the fort. An ancient mosque built by Muhammad Tahir is another major attraction of this fort.

From IIT Kharagpur Campus: It’s 30 km journey from Prem Bazar gate. Can be reached by Bike or by own/rented car. Road direction: Puri gate —>(23 KM through Salua)—->Keshiari (take left towards Belda about 5 km from Keshiari crossing )—->Kukai ( take right turn and take mud road : 3 km )—->Gaganeshwar village.
From Kharagpur Station: There is no direct buses from Station, have to come Prem Bazar by local auto and by bus from Prem Bazar for Keshiari. From Keshiari, local auto or van can be hired. From Kukai, local van for fort can be taken.

Mahishadal
Mahishadal is only 16 kms from Tamluk town where you can visit the Mahishadal Rajbari and the museum there, do boating in the attached park. Also give a visit to Geonkhali, a place 8 kms away from Mahishadal, a perfect picnic spot at the junction (Mohona) of three rivers.

By Air: Nearest airport of  Medinipur is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, which is also called Dum Dum airport.

By Train: The least expensive approach to achieve Medinipur from Mahisadal is to take Digha Puri Sup E from Mahisadal to Kharagpur then take a taxi from Kharagpur to Medinipur.

By Road: The driving separation in the middle of Mahisadal and Medinipur is 96 km, while the airborne separation from Mahisadal to Medinipur is 62 km. The advantageous and quickest approach to reach from Mahisadal to Medinipur is to take a taxi from Mahisadal to Medinipur.

Garbeta

Garbeta, also known as Garhbeta, is a small town located on the banks of the Shilabati River. One of the prime attractions of this town is the Raikota Fort that has four main gates, namely the Lal Darwaja, Rauta Darwaja, Pesa Darwaja and Hanuman Darwaja. Visitors can see seven ponds on the northern side, namely Jaltungi, Indra-Puskarini, Pathuria, Hadua, Mangala, Kobesh Dighi and Amra Puskarini.

By Rail: Trains are accessible from Howrah to achieve Garbera.
By Road: Garbeta can be reached by street from Burdwan. Private autos and rickshaws will take there.

Haldia
Haldia is situated at a distance of 94 km from Kolkata and is a major seaport and industrial belt. Haldia is being developed as a major trade port for Kolkata, intended mainly for bulk cargoes. By Road: The road route from Kolkata is: Esplanade - 63 km - Kolaghat - 3 km - Mecheda - 56 km - Haldia. From Kolkata, bus at Esplanade or at Howrah headed for Haldia. AC Buses are also available to reach Haldia. The bus route traverse via NH-6 via Kolaghat via Nandakumar to Haldia (NH-41).Total duration of bus journey 2.5 hours (Approx).

By Train: From Howrah Railway Stn.you can avail Haldia Local which traverse via Panskura stn.,Tamluk Stn. to Haldia Bandar Station.From Howrah Railway Stn. by any Local train upto Mecheda Station then by Bus to Haldia (via NH-41).

By Air: The nearest Airport is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata, roughly two and a half hour drive from East Midnapore.
By Train: From Howrah Railway Stn.you can avail Haldia Local which traverse via Mecheda via Panskura Stn. to Tamluk Stn. From Howrah Railway Stn. by any Local train upto Mecheda Station then take local bus routes ( Mecheda stn. to Haldia / Mecheda stn. to Srirampur / Mecheda stn. to Nandigram) to reach at Tamluk.
BY Road: East Midnapore is 21 km from Kanthi, 45 km from Tamluk, 110 km from Kharagpur, 132 km from Kolkata, and 312 km from Asansol.
